3 Tips For Easing the Veterans Disability Benefits Application Process

Applying for anything through a federal agency can be a tedious and frustrating process, especially when you need to provide specific documentation. If you're seeking disability benefits through the VA or Social Security Administration (SSA), we've got 3 tips to help ease the process:

Tip #1: Make sure that you have all your documentation prepared.
This means you'll need to gather at least the basic information that proves:

  • when you served in the military;
  • where you were stationed;
  • what jobs and duties you performed;
  • any injuries that occurred during your service; and
  • medical treatment you received for these injuries.

The qualify for disability benefits you must show that your disability was service-connected for VA benefits, and disabling enough to prevent you from performing substantial gainful activity for SSA benefits.

Tip #2: Get a medical exam as soon as possible
when you begin experiencing disabling symptoms that may be connected to a service-related injury or disease. For some veterans, this can happen immediately after being severely injured in an attack while in service. But veterans who manifest conditions or diseases well after they've served will need to seek an exam on their own.

Tip #3: Be organized with all of your application credentials for disability benefits
. Keep copies of all correspondence between you and the VA or SSA and make sure you are meeting the deadlines necessary for submission of certain documents.
