Differences in Social Security Benefits for World War II Veterans

Special Veterans Benefits (SVB) are available to veterans of World War II who reside outside of the United States. These benefits are funded by the federal government and handled by the Social Security Administration, much like SSDI and SSI.

Title VIII of the Social Security Act, "Special Benefits for Certain World War II Veterans," authorizes these benefits to be funded under the United States Treasury's general fund. General eligibility requirements include being:

  • a WWII veteran serving between September 16, 1940 through July 24, 1947;
  • a current resident of another country;
  • age 65 or older as of December 14, 1999;
  • eligible for Supplemental Security Income for December 1999;
  • eligible for SSI the month you apply for SVB; and
  • the recipient of benefit income no greater than 75% of the current SSI federal benefit rate.

If you meet the qualifications for SVB you will receive additional benefits totaling no greater than 75% of the current SSI federal benefit rate.

Once you qualify, the SVB will continue until you return to residing in the United States or you visit the United States for more than a full calendar month. In the case of visitation, your benefits will stop upon the 1-month mark and can only resume once you have left the country and returned to your international residence.

You Have the Power to Help a Disabled American Veteran!

Our veterans deserve the utmost care and respect in exchange for their sacrifice and service to our country, yet many suffer with disabling medical conditions and illness and struggle to make ends meet after life in the service. At Care for Disabled Veterans, our goal is to assist qualified veterans in obtaining the medical evidence they need to seek their rightful benefits for combat-related disabilities.
