How the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs Helps Veterans Survivors Buy a Home

The US Dept. of Veterans Affairs provides a home loan guarantee as one of their many veterans survivor benefits. The first steps are to make sure you're eligible, and then locate, print and file the correct Dept. of Veterans Affairs forms.

The US Dept. of Veterans Affairs can guarantee a loan for a surviving spouse to purchase a home (including a manufactured home or a condo). It can also guarantee a loan to refinance an existing home loan, a benefit that comes in handy for many families struggling to make ends meet after their loved one passes on.

To qualify for the home loan guarantee veterans survivor benefits, your spouse's death must have been service-connected. The VA requires a Certificate of Eligibility, which you can apply for by mail using VA Form 26-1817.

When you submit the request for the home loan guarantee, you may need to prove your eligibility by also sending along your Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) award letter.

If you don't receive DIC, you'll need to provide copies of:

  • the veteran's DD Form 214;
  • your spouse's death certificate; and
  • your marriage certificate.

If you have trouble locating or filling out the appropriate Dept. of Veterans Affairs forms, you can contact your local VA office for assistance. As a survivor, you have several helpful benefits available from the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs, so learn all you can about what resources are offered.
