Simple Transcendental Meditation Therapy for Veteran’s with PTSD

Another natural therapy for PTSD that doesn't involve medication or invasive procedures is being used by some doctors to treat Afghanistan War veterans.

Transcendental meditation is nothing new, it's been around since Maharishi Mahesh Yogii developed it in 1957.
Since then, psychologists have done many studies for various other conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, psychosomatic disease, and even physical problems such as digestion complications and smoking addiction.

Now, Dr. James Austin of the University of Colorado is applying this treatment to veterans with PTSD and generating positive results. Through MRI documentation, Dr. Austin was able to show evidence that transcendental meditation resulted in a 50% reduction in PTSD symptoms after 8 weeks of practice.

The process of transcendental meditation is not based on any single religious doctrine or practice. Anyone who has access to a quiet area for 20 minutes can perform this calming exercise that focuses on breathing control, relaxing the body, and concentrating on a simple mantra of your choice.

As non-traditional treatments continue to gain ground in the medical community our veterans who struggle with PTSD may soon have more options than the regular medication regimens many are placed on.
Meditation, yoga, and environmental therapy are just a few of the many new options being developed today with support from donors to veterans advocacy organizations.
