Treating PTSD Veterans with Cognitive Processing Therapy

As more US veterans look to non-medication treatments for PTSD there has been a therapy in the front line for psychotherapy techniques that does not involve drugs or medical procedures.

Cognitive Processing Therapy Treating Veterans with PTSD

Cognitive Process Therapy, also known as CPT, is a process where veterans are exposed to a combination of imaginative situations and real situations that may produce anxiety related to their PTSD.
During the exposure, the therapist also helps them manage their anxiety through relaxation training, breathing techniques, and focusing on eliminating negative self-talk.

CPT has been found to be as effective as many selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs.
More recent research has shown that the method is also quicker and more effective than other therapies like eye movement desensitization reprocessing.

Treatment with CPT is often the first method of relief many veterans find when they begin to cope with their PTSD disability.
It has been shown to be extremely versatile and can be tailored to a wide range of symptoms and triggers to suit each individual veteran's needs.

In some cases, medication is still needed at the initial stages of this type of treatment, but as more advances in CPT techniques are made, this too may change.
