Understanding Veterans Survivor Benefits from the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs (Part B)

Collecting Documents for Your Veterans Survivor Benefits

Weeding through the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs website to find out which veteran survivor benefits you may qualify for and which Dept. of Veterans Affairs forms you need to fill out can be time-consuming and frustrating, especially in the wake of the loss of your loved one.

Each type of VA benefit requires you to fill out a specific form to claim them. But before you even begin finding the right forms, it's a good idea to have several important documents on hand, such as:

  • the veteran's VA claim number (if applicable);
  • the veteran's Social Security number
  • veteran's death certificate;
  • a copy of each child's birth certificate;
  • the veteran's discharge certificate;
  • any life insurance policies; and
  • a copy of all marriage certificates and divorce decrees.

Applying for Veterans Survivor Benefits

After you've determined which veterans survivor benefits you're eligible for and have collected all the above pertinent information, then it's time to locate the Dept. of Veterans Affairs forms you'll need to submit.

You can visit the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs website and download the appropriate application forms and follow the directions on completing and filing the applications.

For example, if you determine that you're eligible for the dependency and indemnity compensation, you'll notice that you have to file VA form 21-534a. You'll then have to attach a few specified documents and take the forms to your local VA office.

Some of these forms can be pretty lengthy and daunting; don't let that discourage you from seeking the benefits you and your family need and deserve after the loss of your loved one, one of our country's heroes.

You Have the Power to Help a Disabled American Veteran!

Medical evidence is a critical component in the successful fight for veterans' survivor benefits. Unfortunately, many veterans lack the financial resources to obtain an independent medical exam (IME) that can provide this crucial evidence.

At Care for Disabled Veterans, we focus on connecting qualified veterans to doctors and health care facilities that provide IME services for disability claims. We are a non-profit organization that relies on donations to help provide the funding necessary to obtain these records and help disabled American veterans qualify for combat-related disability benefits.
