Donating from Your IRA: A Way to Make a United States Veterans Tribute (Part A)

If you have a traditional IRA, you can use some of that money to support our United States veterans! Tribute efforts to help say thank you for veterans' service to our country can come in many forms, and financial donations are one of the simplest and most effective ways to do so. The Department of Veterans Affairs also has resources that can benefit from these donations.

Eligibility for Donating to United States Veterans Out of Your IRA

There are some conditions both you and your charity of choice need to meet for your veterans' tribute to be considered tax-deductable. As far as personal qualifications, you must be 70.5 years old to donate out of your IRA to an approved charity. Of course, this does not mean younger Americans can't say thank you for veterans by donating in another way.

If you meet the age requirement, your next step should be to investigate the charity you are donating to. The IRS only accepts IRA distributions to charities that are on their approved list.

Your donation must also meet tax-law requirements, including:

  • the distribution must be made directly by the IRA trustee to the charity;
  • the check must be written to the charity itself, no other party;
  • the donation must meet the normal tax-law requirements for a 100% deductable transaction;
  • the distribution must otherwise be taxable; and
  • your donations are less than $100,000 per year.

There are many benefits that can come from making a donation to our veterans. Tribute efforts like charitable donations help our United States veterans where the Department of Veterans Affairs can sometimes fall short, such as obtaining a proper disability rating for benefits.
