What is the purpose of Veterans Day? Ways to Honor Our Veterans (Part B)

What is the Purpose of Veterans Day: To Honor Our Veterans, Of Course!

Those who spend their days working with veterans can honor our veterans on this special day in a number of ways. There are many events both nationally and locally that you can participate in to show our disabled war veterans that you appreciate their service.

For instance, in Washington, D.C. there are 7 wreath-laying ceremonies taking place on Veterans Day, including the Veterans Day National Ceremony held at Arlington National Cemetery. Many other military memorial sites and facilities across the nation will be holding special events and ceremonies, typically starting at 11 a.m.

To personally honor our veterans there are many ways you can show your support on this day. To show your support you may choose to:

  • fly the American flag;
  • observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. in remembrance of fallen veterans;
  • send a letter of support to troops overseas through the U.S. Department of Defense website or the Department of Veterans Affairs;
  • volunteer to help plant flags at the military section of your local cemetery;
  • donate some time to help at a local food pantry or visit a veteran at a VA facility;
  • visit with any veterans you know personally and thank them for their service;
  • offer support to a family of a disabled veteran or those working with veterans; and
  • make a donation to a veterans support or advocacy group.

Donating to a veteran's advocacy group is one of the most long-term ways you can honor our veterans and those who are working with veterans. For those who are able to give a financial gift on Veterans Day, you may consider working with a non-profit group that provides a meaningful service to disabled veterans and caregivers on a year-round basis.

You Have the Power to Help a Disabled American Veteran!

Medical evidence is a critical component in the successful fight for veterans disability benefits. Unfortunately, many veterans lack the financial resources to obtain an independent medical exam (IME) that can provide this crucial evidence. These deserving men and women are left to rely on the VA medical system, which may not always provide the best assessment of their conditions.

At Care for Disabled Veterans we focus on connecting qualified veterans to doctors and health care facilities that provide IME services for disability claims. We are a non-profit organization that relies on donations to help provide the funding necessary to obtain these records and help disabled American veterans qualify for combat-related disability benefits.
